Masseria Corrente

Masseria Corrente was built in the 18th century. This ancient masseria complex is quite small, dominated by the main house, with two trulli once used for keeping animals. The roof of the main house, known locally as a "tetto a cummersa", is made out of limestone slabs, a style typical of Locorotondo, which is 4 km away. The surrounding land, about two hectares in total, is still used for growing wheat and forage crops.

Details

The main house, now refurbished as a holiday home, consists of a single-storey house with a little tower next to it. Just inside the main door is the living room with its antique furniture and wooden benches around the fireplace. Through an archway is a television room.

The compact kitchen is fully-equipped and functional, and leads out into a courtyard at the back of the house. Beyond the living room, a passageway leads to a large bathroom with a shower, and two bedrooms: one double bedroom and one twin. Next to the entrance is an ancient stone staircase leading up to the first floor of the tower, where the bedroom, which sleeps 2, affords breathtaking views over the Itria Valley. Across the courtyard from the main house, the two trulli – intact but not designed for human habitation – have had their cones refurbished. They provide a fascinating opportunity to understand how our predecessors used dry stone without cement for building.

As well as being an ideal place for a quiet holiday away from it all, Masseria Corrente is also close to the charming cities of Martina Franca (3 km) and to Locorotondo (2.5 km), where you are sure to be welcomed with open arms. Days out can include the Sassi in Matera (50 km), Taranto with its fascinating classical Museum and the Mar Piccolo (27 km), Alberobello (the trullo city, 15 km), the caves at Castellana (20 km), the Zoosafari in Fasano (16 km), Bari (75 km), Castel del Monte and Trani (100 Km) and Lecce (100 km). And if it is wonderful beaches you are looking for, you are close to both the Adriatic (25 km) and the Ionian coasts (35 km). The wildlife reserve at Torre Guaceto is a 45-minute drive. The area is full of restaurants and supermarkets. Special prices for guests at Masseria Corrente mean you can enjoy eating the typical local produce at the Petra Nevara restaurant, half a kilometre away, with its ancient "Neviera" (a 17th century cellar for storing snow).
