| La cummersa |
|
The term “Cummersa” refers to the typical “chiancarelle”, limestone slabs used for the rooftops in the old quarter of Locorotondo, overlooking the splendid “Valle d’Itria” and whose delightful white houses have deservedly earned it a place among “Italy’s most beautiful town centres”.
As well as its atmosphere of intimacy and familiarity, the old city provides a warm welcome, with a number of osterias and trattorias where the visitor can enjoy the genuine ancient flavours of the Apulian countryside. July and August see an interesting attraction – the jazz event known as “Locus Festival” (www.locusfestival.it). The surrounding area makes for great days out – beginning with the most famous, Alberobello, the trulli capital just 6 km away, the Caves of Castellana, the important archaeological site of Egnathia, the wonderful Ostuni, the White City, Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve run by the WWF, without forgetting the children’s favourite – the zoo-safari at Fasano. Make sure you don’t miss the many beaches nearby, bathed by the crystalline waters of the Adriatic.
